What is a Durable Financial Power of Attorney?
How does it help me?
A Durable Financial Power of Attorney is a special tool that allows someone to act on your behalf in the management of your affairs, without court involvement. You choose an “agent” or “attorney-in-fact” (not to be confused with “attorney”) who can act on your behalf. The benefit of a Durable Financial Power of Attorney, is that if you are incapacitated, out of the country, or need special help with a business matter, your agent can act for you. For example:
-
Sign a deed or title document
-
Manage IRA or 401(k) investment accounts
-
Sign beneficiary documents for you
-
Apply for governmental programs on your behalf
-
Hire attorneys and accountants that you may need
-
Assist you with lawsuits or other matters when you are incapacitated
-
Put assets in your Revocable Trust
A Durable Financial Power of Attorney works during your lifetime only and becomes invalid at the time of your death.
This agent has a high decree of authority – chose someone you trust!
